Amanda stood by the window and held her hand up to her collar. She was fiddling with the buttons on her shirt nervously, and just praying that, this time, he was actually going to be gone for good.

Outside on the driveway, Rob was busy hurling the remainder of his possessions into the trunk of his car. He looked angry, but really, he had been lucky that she had agreed to keep them for so long, especially when he had been living elsewhere for almost two years.

She sighed as she watched him clatter and crash around. His temper had always been something that had unnerved her, but now, as she watched him finally prepare to leave her life for good, she felt nothing but resentment. He had made her live in a state of fear for as long as she could remember. Fear of what may happen if he snapped, fear of how loud he could shout, and fear of what would happen if she was ever without him.

Now she knew, he had been a controller, and she was much better off on her own.

When they had separated a couple of years before, she had finally felt as if she could breathe, and her and her children were finally safe and able to begin living their lives without the risk of an unruly and unpredictable person around them day in and day out.

Rob slammed the trunk lid down and glared at her over the roof of the car. He was staring deep into her eyes, almost pleadingly, as if he wanted her to reconsider her decision.

But obviously, it was far too late.

She had checked out and moved on long ago, he was clearly the only one who had still held a small amount of hope for the revival of their marriage and their family. She raised her hand kindly and waved to him and he shook his head and stared down at the ground.

He was angry, she could see it etched all over his face. But he only had himself to blame.

“Goodbye,” she whispered to herself as he opened the driver’s side door and climbed in behind the wheel. “And good riddance.”

She was finally free of him and all the drama that came with him.

She waited and listened to the engine roar to life, she watched his lights flash on and him begin to pull away down the drive and toward the road. When he had left and she could see that he had finally gone, a little smile crept across her face.

“This is it,” she said. “This is the beginning of a new chapter. Finally.”

She closed the curtains and moved toward the front door to ensure that it was locked, and then she did a little victory dance on the spot. She felt free and liberated. She felt awake and ready to tackle the world.

She wandered through to the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, and poured herself a celebratory glass of wine. She toasted thin air, and then she sipped at it as she truly felt as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

  She was single again.

Maybe with a few extras to what she had had the last time she had been on her own, but that only made the journey even more important.

She was now solely responsible not just for herself, but for her two girls as well.

She placed the glass down on the counter and took the back stairs out of the kitchen and up to the second floor. She wandered along the hallway silently and stopped by Madison’s door first to see her sleeping soundly, lying on her stomach and being kept warm by her favorite bunny toy. She smiled affectionately as she looked on, and then she closed the door ever so slightly and moved on to Grace’s room.

Grace was a much lighter sleeper than Madison, and for that reason, Amanda made extra sure that she crept along to the door and didn’t make a sound. When she peered around the corner, she saw her adorable little girl cuddled up amongst her blankets and pillows, curled onto her side and looking as if she had never been more comfortable in her entire life.

She breathed a sigh of relief as she made her way back down the stairs and into the kitchen. They wer
e both fast asleep which meant they hadn’t been disturbed or heard Rob coming into the house. He had come and got the last of his things from the garage and he had left without either of them knowing any different.

She smiled, picked up her wine, and headed back into the front room where she collapsed onto the couch with the remote in her hand and began to flick through the channels.

“I’m officially a single mom,” she whispered to herself before she took another sip and settled on a documentary about home renovations. “And I couldn’t be happier.”

She curled her knees up next to herself and pulled a blanket over her legs. This was the first evening in as long as she could remember that she felt relaxed and as if she could truly unwind. The threat of Rob turning up at the house to collect his things had dragged on for what felt like months. When she had finally asked him to come and make it official, he had protested at first, but it hadn’t taken long for him to come around. He needed to move on with his life as much as she did. But she had the distinct feeling he was going to find it a little harder. He was the kind of man who couldn’t let go. And even though he knew he should, he was clearly still trying to keep some kind of hold over Amanda and the girls. Not that she would ever let him.

She had even refused his offer of extra child support.

It had been a bold move, and she didn’t know what the hell she was thinking when it fully came down to it, but all she knew was that she had to make it out in the world alone. She wanted to look after herself and provide for her daughters without the worry of Rob trying to claim that he had a right to dictate how she lived her life. She knew that if she let him have any kind of extra hold over her, he would fully use it to his advantage, and she was done. She didn’t want to have to answer to him anymore. That’s what a divorce was. A clean break and she was making it.

She chewed her lip and thought about what she would have to do in the coming weeks to make sure that she and the girls were cared for properly. They would be back at school in a matter of days after their summer break, and she was going to have to find a new job after her last one had ended. She had never needed to feel the pressure of being a temp before now, but with her contract ending at her last office, she was now in a bit of a sticky situation.

She pulled out her cellphone and flicked through her emails. The agency she worked for had been in touch several times offering her roles but none of them, so far, had been suitable. She hadn’t been able to work late evenings because of the girls, and a lot of the jobs that the agency was recruiting for seemed to be overnight work. There was an abundance of late night transcription jobs for law firms, work that was a matter of urgency at the end of a busy day to prepare for trials the following morning, and shifts that ran from 10pm until 7am. But how could she ever even consider something like that? It would take her away from the girls and every single pay check would be spent on a nanny, or a childminder, and she simply didn’t have it in her.

She sipped her wine and scrolled through the next batch of suggestions from the agency. Some of them were slightly more promising than others, but it was the word PERMANENT that caught her eye and made her give one, in particular, her full attention.

She opened the job posting and read it slowly, taking in each and every detail…

“Wow,” she breathed as she scanned back up to the beginning of the email and took another sip of wine. “Sounds like whoever this is, they must be pretty important.”

She read the advert again and focused on each little detail. She was so used to generic job descriptions that this one sounded enthralling and like the kind of thing she would jump at the chance to do. They were looking for a total superstar, that much was clear… And she could only hope that the role would have a salary to match it. She felt momentarily excited and thought about what it could mean to work for someone powerful and important, and then she opened up a message to reply…

Hi Kat, I’m interested in this one. Would I be able to come down to the agency to talk about it tomorrow?

She pressed send on the email to the recruiter at the agency that she was used to dealing with, and then she relaxed back into the big, bouncy cushions on the couch and let her mind wander.

She knew it sounded like a lot to deal with, but she was determined to get this job. It sounded like a great opportunity, and also the idea of it becoming permanent after so many months of uncertainty made her heart race. All she wanted was stability and to know where she was heading each day.

She finished the remainder of her glass, and then she turned off the TV. She felt positive and full of ideas as she began to climb the stairs to her bedroom, and when she closed the door behind her and slipped underneath the covers, she felt as if she was really about to be on the verge of something.

“Time to start the next phase of your life,” she smiled to herself as she rolled onto her side and turned out the light.

When the morning came, she was going to call the agency if she hadn’t heard back from them, and ask if she could go in for a chat. She had found a job she liked the sound of and she was determined to jump on it. She was all they had asked for and more… and now, she was just going to have to prove it.

“It’s going to be an amazing role for whoever lands it,” Kat the agency girl said as she sipped her coffee and twirled on her chair. “It only came in yesterday and I sent it out to you as soon as I saw it.”

“Well, I’m more than interested,” Amanda said as she wiggled her foot nervously. She had been sitting in the office for almost half an hour, and she still felt as if she knew nothing about the job and where she would potentially be working.

“I said I would only put forth our best candidates,” Kat grinned as she held her pen to her lip and bit the end mischievously. “And it just so happens, that out of the two profiles and resumes I sent over, the client wants to meet with you.”

Amanda felt her heart jump a little in her chest and she sat forward with a wide smile.

“Really?” she beamed. “Well, that’s great news!”

“It sure is,” Kat smiled as she twirled her chair again. “I knew, if we held out, the right role would come along for you.”

“So, where is it? And when?” Amanda was alr
eady prepping in her head what she would wear if she went along to the interview and how she would style her hair. The job sounded so interesting; she had no idea who she was going to be meeting with, but she could tell that it wasn’t going to be with someone who didn’t have a good idea of what they wanted in life. If they had already looked through profiles of potential candidates and had come back with a decision immediately then they were obviously on the ball.

“Well,” Kat said as she sucked in a huge lungful of air. “They need to see you today. In fact,” she turned to look over her shoulder and glanced at the clock on the wall. “They said around noon… is that doable?”

Amanda felt her face drop and her head spin. It was already eleven, that meant that she wasn’t going to have but barely any time to prepare any kind of opening statement, never mind choose an outfit, touch up her make-up and restyle her hair.

“You’ll be fine,” Kat said as she got to her feet and came around to the front of the desk. She sat on the edge of it in front of Amanda and looked down at her warmly. “This guy, he’s not very conventional.”

Amanda looked down at what she was wearing, and although it wasn’t scruffy, it wasn’t exactly what she would have thought was ideal for an interview. She was wearing skinny jeans and heels, with a statement necklace and a navy, fitted jacket.

“I’m wearing jeans,” she said with a grimace. “I can’t just go over there looking like this.”

“Trust me,” Kat said with a wry smile. “This is perfect.”

She held out her hand and pulled Amanda up to her feet and gave her the once over. “In fact, I would say you’ve nailed it. That’s why I didn’t prep you for a potential meeting over the phone. This guy, he isn’t going to want a PA who is overly corporate. The ad may sound serious, but I get the feeling he is just going to need someone he can trust, work well alongside, and not feel as if they are a suit following him around. Know what I mean?”
